Run for the Call: The Beginning

Yet I consider life of no importance to me, if only I may finish my course and the ministry that I received from the Lord Jesus, to bear witness to the gospel of God’s grace. Acts 20:24

At the beginning of the 2009-2010 school year, a new policy was put in place in the Archdiocese of Cincinnati which required all college seminarians to cover the full cost of their college tuition and books while the Archdiocese covered the cost of formation, room and board. It was a very fair decision on behalf of the Archdiocese and for the first year, there were no major hiccups. In its second year, however, the new policy made it difficult for some of the new candidates to enter seminary without additional financial assistance, which the Archdiocese generously provided. It is, after all, the philosophy of the Archdiocese that no man who may be called to the priesthood and has been approved by the Archdiocese, should be denied the chance to discern his call within the context of seminary formation based on financial burden alone. And so, these men were given larger loans by the Archdiocese with the expectation that if they leave their seminary formation before ordination, they would be responsible for the full amount of that loan.

It was a great solution and an easy one, but one, I’m certain didn’t make the family of the young man feel much more confident about their ability to afford the seminary education (if their son doesn’t complete his studies there) and one that puts the Archdiocese in a little bit of a tighter position (even if minimally and temporarily). It was a great solution, but one, I believed, could be better.

If we had a fund for just such situations, that could be financed by generous contributors from across the Archdiocese, there would be no additional financial burden on the part of just one person or institution or family and the people of the Archdiocese could take part in helping to support the men who will be our pastors one day, God willing.

Thus, Run for the Call was born. We are a team of men and women, including many of our current seminarians who will be running in the events of the Flying Pig Marathon weekend to raise money and awareness for the need to support these cash strapped young men being called to the Altar of God!

Over the course of the next 5 months we will need your help. First, and most importantly, we ask that you offer up our team and our seminarians in prayer. That we may all be successful in fulfilling the ministry we have been sent to do. Secondly, we ask you to spread the word about Run for the Call and direct as much traffic as you can to this site where people will get to know our team and our cause and will have the opportunity to donate. Finally, we ask that you consider joining our team as well. We are currently looking for more runners for any of the Flying Pig Marathon weekend events. Anyone, of any age of any size or ability, we would love to have you join our team!
